| Post–conflict recovery in Angola Angola is at the most critical crossroads in its history. After its protracted civil conflict (running from 1975 to 2002), the country is now rebuilding and faces an unprecedented opportunity for social and economic development. Despite rapid economic growth (12% per annum, excluding oil and diamonds), there is still a huge inequality of income distribution as 60% of the population live in extreme poverty. Key issues: • Most of Angola's wartime population was displaced, Some 450,000 refugees have now returned from neighboring countries, but 43,000 children remain separated from their families. • Angola has the world's second-highest mortality rate of children under 5 -- with over 200,000 children dying every year. • 10% of the population have some kind of disability. • Conflict has devastated most basic infrastructure, leaving over 8 million people without basic sanitation and safe drinking water. • Over 10 million rural people are food insecure. |
Nearly three decades of civil conflict created an unparalleled complex humanitarian emergency and extreme poverty in Angola. Today, major government rebuilding efforts are underway, in partnership with the private sector and relief agencies.
As in all low and middle-income countries, most of the poor live in rural areas. Much of Angola's poverty derives from its protracted civil conflict and displaced populations. Since the signing of the peace agreement in 2002, Angola is in a transition phase of post-conflict rehabilitation. Specific measures for long-term economic and agricultural growth are underway to alleviate this deep and widespread poverty.
