Sudan (North)

Sudan is Africa’s largest country, situated in the north eastern region of the continent. The official languages are Arabic and English, with Arabic being widely spoken in the Muslim-dominant North.

North Sudan has abundant human, natural and mineral resources that afford it a huge potential but the decades-long conflicts and resulting humanitarian crisis have hampered the country's progress and diminished its potential.

Poor infrastructure, continuing conflict and massive war-displaced populations have undermined development and significantly affected children and their communities in various parts of the country.

Humanitarian Crisis in Darfur

The Darfur conflict started in 2003 and pits government forces and nomadic militias against rebel groups fighting for economic and political equity. The conflict has also spilled over Sudan's borders into Chad and Central African Republic.

Various peace negotiations have so far failed to end the conflict. Violence has intensified in Darfur, making it difficult to deliver aid in parts of the war-wracked region. A combined United Nations-African Union peacekeeping force began deploying in 2008, taking over from a small, overstretched African Union force.

According to the Darfur Humanitarian Profile series issued by the United Nations in October 2008, 4.7 million people have been affected by the conflict in Darfur. More than 2.6 million people are internally displaced in Darfur, with as many as 300,000 people who may have died.

World Vision’s interventions in South Darfur:
• Monthly food rations for more than 300,000 people in camps for displaced people and settlements for war-affected communities.
• Health and nutrition services for 150,000 people.
• Water supply and hygiene promotion activities for more than 100,000 people.
• Agricultural inputs, farmer training and extension services for more than 45,000 direct war-affected beneficiaries.
• Care and community services to thousands of children, youths, women, men and communities in camps and settlements for displaced and war-scarred people.

Peace and Conflict

In 2005, Sudan emerged from more than 20 years of civil conflict between the north and the south following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Another peace agreement has quelled fighting and tension in the country’s eastern region, but Darfur, western Sudan, remains in the grip of a conflict that started in 2003, despite various attempts to bring peace to the war-weary region.

World Vision in Northern Sudan

World Vision commenced humanitarian work in Darfur in June 2004, but its operations in Northern Sudan date back to 1983. Currently, World Vision Northern Sudan operates in Darfur, Blue Nile, and Khartoum states. Preparations to start rehabilitation and reconstruction activities in Kassala state are well underway.

World Vision Northern Sudan runs a host of relief, recovery, and development programmes that seek to contribute to peace and reconciliation in Sudan, while directly and indirectly benefitting more than 1.5 million people in communities across this region.

Currently World Vision is:

• bringing between US$45 million and US$50 million worth of relief and development works annually to needy communities in South Darfur, Khartoum and Blue Nile states.
• directly providing humanitarian assistance to about 500,000 displaced and war-affected people in South Darfur.
• supporting return and reintegration in Blue Nile through interventions in water and sanitation, food security and livelihoods support and primary health sectors for more than 65,000 beneficiaries.
• working with community-based organisations to improve the lives of about 45,000 displaced and poor people around Khartoum town through agriculture, livelihoods, school feeding and water and sanitation projects.
• providing care, psychosocial, educational and vocational support to more than 34,000 children and youths affected by the Darfur conflict.
• boosting household food production in all its operational areas by providing agricultural inputs, farmer training, extension services, and other forms of support.
