World Vision has this month distributed non-food items to 10,751 people from 750 households that were affected by floods in Bongor, southwestern Chad, in September.

The floods caused by heavy rains in August and September disrupted livelihoods in Bongor and surrounding communities, leaving thousands of people destitute, but most of them didn’t receive assistance then.

World Vision has provided the flood victims with non-food items valued at about US$20,000.

The items comprised 750 plastic mats, 750 mosquito nets and 50 boxes of soap. Each household received a mat, a mosquito net and four pieces of a 400-gramme bar of soap.

World Vision partnered with the Chadian Red Cross, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and local Chadian authorities to provide the assistance.

“We used our available resources to meet the needs of the flood-affected households,” said Jean Gabriel Carvalho, World Vision’s operations director in Chad.

An assessment done by the Red Cross in mid September found that the floods destroyed more than 2,000 huts and mud houses in the 15 wards of Bongor and seven surrounding villages, leaving more than 400 people homeless.

“The floods will affect food security in the area because Bongor is a rice-producing zone and with this huge amount of water, the likelihood of poor harvests is very high,” said Martin Naindouba, World Vision’s food security in Chad.
