Hope is in the air. Huts are under construction in Acholiland. More people are returning to their homes from displacement camps.

Water is in short supply, but World Vision has partnered with Rotary International and initiated a water and sanitation project to meet the returnees’ water needs.

The project launched in March in four districts of Northern Uganda, in the Acholi sub-region, comes at a time when communities that have lived in displaced people’s camps for years, are embarking on long treks to their original homes.

Northern Uganda’s 20-year insurgency claimed lives, destroyed property and displaced entire communities.

World Vision and Rotary International want to provide assistance to the less fortunate members of the community, said Rudo Kwaramba, World Vision’s national director in Uganda.

The area’s need for water is huge. The project will construct 28 boreholes, rehabilitate 16 others, and construct 16 rainwater harvesting tanks.

Sanitation is an important component of the project because as people return to their villages,

they find no latrines. If ignored, poor sanitation leads to contamination of water sources during the rainy season.

The two-year project funded to the tune of more than US$ 930,000 will support communities to construct latrines in eight model villages. It will also conduct hygiene and sanitation awareness sessions in eight schools and communities.

It has started in earnest, with communities and project staff conducting assessments and holding discussions to pave the way for the planned drilling of boreholes.
