“When I look through the lens of my camera, I see the suffering and resilience of children in different parts of Africa. We need to tell these stories to help improve the life of children.” Charles made the appeal while accepting the honour he jointly won with Roseline Wangui. The pair received their award for a television story about the quest for education by children in Pokot in the northern area of Kenya whose residents experience frequent episodes of cattle rustling between warring ethnic communities. The story was hailed by the judges as, “...comprehensive, in less than five minutes they were able to tell the story in a compelling way, they were tenacious as a journalist should be.” Tears welled in the eyes of some people in the audience as they watched little boys and girls use pointed scribble notes on the skin of their laps! The highly publicised 15th CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards ceremony, 29th May, was graced by the President of Uganda, Yoweri Museveni and attended by the head of MultiChoice and the Head of International News gathering CNN among many other distinguished guests. This was first time the event was held in Uganda. Best Journalism The prestigious African journalism award celebrations recognises the best in African journalism and played out much like a graduation ceremony as each winner of the 16 categories of awards was called forward to receive their award. The much-coveted Journalist of the Year award went to South African Sam Rogers for her television story on the plight of albino children in Tanzania whose body parts are sought for use in magical rituals. “I thank World Vision who has given me the opportunity to play a part in highlighting and transforming the plight of the African child,” said Charles as he received the TV News Bulletin Award from Jeff Kupsky the President of the Turner Broadcasting System Europe. World Vision was the only non-media organization to be recognized at this global media event. This year there were more than 2,000 entries from 42 countries in Africa. Unlike many glamorous media award events, many of the stories that moved the audience and won the Judges commendation were about giving voice to people marginalised and oppressed by injustice and poverty, particularly the African child. The partnership CNN has with MultiChoice gives the awards a huge platform across Africa because of the continent-wide reach of the MultiChoice cable network.
