Kuangar is at the end of the road. Through mine-infested land, it is an eight-hour drive on dirt roads from Menongue, the capital of the province of Cuando Cubango in Angola.

The administrative centre is located on the banks of the mighty Cuvango River at the border with Namibia. The region has recently been hit by climate change effects, with repeated flooding in the river plain and drought in the upland areas.

Early in the morning Esther Ndongo washes up, takes breakfast, and wears her school uniform – a white shirt and navy blue skirt.

With her neighbours and friends, she walks to Susila Dharma Primary School about two kilometres from her home.

At six years, Esther is brilliant and loves pens and pencils. She loves drawing pictures on anything that pleases her – books, old newspapers and even on her clothes.

Although Esther is yet to decide what she wants to become in future, she simply loves going to school because she feels happy there and has made many friends. Her best subject is French.

Zimbabwe: World Vision cushioning children affected by HIV/AIDS

Story by Ndlovu, Sibusisiwe, WV Zimbabwe Communications

Ever since his father passed away after suffering from ‘a long illness’ in September 2007, Thabani’s confidence was shaken – the once talkative boy became shy and withdrawn.

His ailing mother, Margaret Sibanda was at a loss as to how she could support her son and other children.

Where hunger stalks the homes of vulnerable households in drought prone Lupane, HIV/AIDS is also on the prowl to eliminate hope among afflicted families.

The only thing that Thabani looked forward to was going to school, where he would get a hot cooked meal and friends.

World Vision pays his school fees and provides him with essential schoolbooks and uniforms.
